New Zealand's Maori Arrivle
Kia ora
The first Maori explorer to reach Aotearoa ( the land of the long white cloud ) was Kupe.
He travelled across the South Pacific on his waka (boat) using the stars and the ocean as his guide.
He came from his Polynesian homeland referred as to Hawaiiki.
It isn't the long 15 minute ride from Auckland city to Waiheke island.
It would have taken Kupe many mouths to sail the south pacific.
Kia ora ano and happy Christmas

Kia Ora Nia-Jaye and Happy Christmas to you, too!
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful to see that you have joined the Summer Learning Journey programme this year. We're thrilled to have you on the team and to have the chance to blog with you this year.
I really enjoyed reading your post and Kupe and his journey across the South Pacific. It certainly would have been quite a long and challenging journey, wouldn't it?
What is the longest journey that you have taken? When I was younger I drove from Auckland to the bottom of the south island of New Zealand (Invercargill). It took days to get there and involved going on a large ferry across the Cook Strait from Wellington to Picton. I really enjoyed the adventure!
I hope that you will continue to journey with us over the break as part of the Summer Learning Journey programme.
See you online again soon, I hope!
Cheers,
Rachel :)
Hi Nia-Jaye!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Ellee, I am another part of the Summer Learning Journey Crew that is commenting on your blogs this summer.
Looks like you have made a great start to your activities this summer, awesome work!
Hope you have had a good Christmas and New Years break? Have you been up to anything special?
I liked reading about Kupe! I haven't heard much of his story before but I think it is pretty special that you know about the first explorer to arrive in New Zealand!
What do you think Kupe would think of New Zealand now? It would be a very different place than the one he arrived in...
Hope you enjoy the rest of the school holidays Nia-Jaye, hopefully we will see you back blogging soon!
Ellee :)
